Rsnapshot - filesystem snapshot utility for making backups

by admin on Apr.23, 2008, under Backups, Linux

First thing I found in my mail this morning was a link to theĀ Rsnapshot website with a comment that this took less than 10 minutes to set up on a new machine.

Now we all know how important backups are when you go into the hosting business and if you do not have time to write your own scripts or don’t want to hurt your pocket with license fees to use Acronis Trueimage for example, this definitly seems to be the way to go. Either way you will still need to have a backup machine with large amounts of hard drive space which includes physical hard drive recovery meaning raid 5/6/10.

What I found interesting about this specific utility is the following:
“Files can be restored by the users who own them, without the root user getting involved.”
This to me is very interesting, and coupled with some tweaks you can automate a few things to reduce the sys admins work.

After playing with this script I will post a follow up on how usefull it is and whether it can be depended on or not.
